Laboratory at M. N. Technical Institute A
state of the art Networking Laboratory has been set up by FAER and
D-Link India ltd at M.N.Technical Institute to facilitate the faculty
as well as the students to get an indepth exposure to the current
trends in computer networking focussing on extensive hands on working
experience with various networking products (both wired and wireless).
It is also proposed to conduct Faculty Development training programmes
on Computer Networking by effective utilization of this lab resources
for the training programme. Two faculty members from MNTI have been
trained by M/s D-Link at Goa as a part of this lab activity. Technology Application Centre at M.S.Ramaiah Polytechnic The foundation in association
with M/s Haritasa Electronics Inc, Bangalore has set up a Technology
Application Centre at M.S.Ramaiah Polytechnic as a part of the Industry-Institute
Initiative. This lab is currently working on applications of RFID
devices and development of other RF applications catering to the
industrial needs. A prototype of a handheld wireless RF remote has
been developed to control upto 16 electrical appliances. The faculty
attached to this centre under guidance from FAER and M/s Haritasa
Electronics will be involved in design and development of various
microcontroller based products such as programmable event timer
for street light control, low cost traffic Signaling systems with
solid state displays (LED) and many more. The industry had also
recently offloaded their assembly and testing of the electronic
modules to this centre which was a part of the major equipment being
designed and developed by them for their clients. About 500 such
modules were assembled, tested and handed over back to the industry
successfully. The director and CEO of this company Mr. V. Prabhakar
congratulated the faculty attached to this centre for having executed
this activity to their complete satisfaction. PC Hardware maintenance and trouble shooting Lab at M.S.Ramaiah Polytechnic A laboratory completely dedicated to the PC Hardware
maintenance and trouble shooting has been set up by FAER and M/s
Taurus Hardsoft solutions Pvt. ltd, Bangalore. This lab. has been
equipped with state of art PC's so that training related to hardware
maintenance, trouble shooting, up-gradation and installation of
OS can be imparted to the Faculty as well as the students. This
centre has trained about 100 students and about 50 faculty members
on Hardware Maintenance related to state of art PC's and also Networking
products. Embedded System Laboratory at Acharya Polytechnic An embedded system Laboratory has been set up
at Acharya Polytechnic, Bangalore in association with M/s Embedded
system solutions Pvt. Ltd. This Lab is completely equipped with
several Micro controller kits, interface modules and also PIC Micro
controller Development system with software development tools. The
resources of this lab have been utilized to conduct training programmes
for both faculty as well as students from other Polytechnics. UPS
and Power Systems Lab at M. N. Technical Institute The Foundation in association with M/s Auro Power
Systems, Bangalore has set up an UPS and power systems lab at M.
N. Technical Institute, Bangalore. This lab provides training in
assembling, testing and trouble shooting of UPS systems for the
students and faculty. Both students and faculty are being taken
to the industry for advanced training in UPS systems and also their
experts visit the institute periodically for imparting training
to Faculty and students. Post
Diploma Programme on Software Testing Several Polytechnics Principals and the Directorate
of Technical Education (DTE) expressed their grave concern about
diploma students in Computer Science and Information Science not
getting placements in Software companies as compared to their BE
counterparts. Hence they approached the foundation for assistance
and suggestions to overcome this malady. FAER immediately came to
their rescue by suggesting to start a post diploma Programme in
Software testing as this would provide the necessary skills for
a diploma student to suit the Software Industry needs in testing.
On request from the DTE, the foundation in consultation with expert
members drawn from the industry like Motorola, Jataayu have prepared
the necessary curriculum which has been approved and accepted by
the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) for immediate launching
of this 15 month Post Diploma Programme in Software Testing The
first batch is scheduled to commence from June/July 2005.Initially
it is proposed to run this programme in a few selected Private and
Government Polytechnics for which FAER will assist in faculty recruitment
and training. On successful completion of this course, several software
companies would certainly consider the students for placement as
testers. Training Workshop for students The foundation has organized the following workshops
for students of M. N. Technical Institute on request from the Secretary,
MNTI: A three day workshop on advanced micro controllers
and their applications was conducted by Mr. Arun Kumar of A. R.
Consultants, Bangalore between Jan 29th-
31st
2005. This workshop touched upon both theory and programming aspects
of Holtek Micro controller, extensively used in the consumer and
telecom products. On the concluding day of the workshop, the students
were made to build their own mini project based on this micro controller.
About 80 students participated in this workshop. A three day workshop on Digital Electronics was
conducted by M/s A.R.Consultants between Feb.23rd-25th, 2005 .This workshop
aimed at providing the basic concepts of digital circuits and building
blocks. Extensive lab sessions facilitated the students to carry
out experiments in understanding the operation of the various digital
device components. (IC's). About 120 students attended this workshop.
Students were encouraged to design and build their own mini project
at the concluding day of the workshop. A three day workshop on Web Design was conducted
by Mr. Prasanna Kumar, resource person from M/s Tomax,
Bangalore between March10th-12th
,2005.This workshop focused on Web technologies, HTML and web page
design with intensive practical hands on sessions for students audience

|| The foundation for advancement of education and
research (FAER) a non profit registered trust promoted by academics
and industry leaders has been promoting several programs and projects
to improve the quality of education at all levels and introduce
new and innovative programs on education. The foundation has already
conducted several programs on modern technologies like wireless,
pc servicing, simputers, rf technologies, power conditioning, networks,
web design etc for faculty of engineering colleges and polytechnics. The foundation looked at the polytechnic education
and discussed various options of long-term educational programs.
Based on these discussions it was decided to promote a post diploma
program in a very important and employment oriented area like software
testing. The program was approved by the Board of Technical Education
and Government of Karnataka for running in two polytechnics. FAER developed
the curriculum after several rounds of discussions with industrialists. The curriculum deals with the relevant mathematics
and problem solving techniques. It includes software engineering
quality engineering, testing models, techniques plans and implementation,
scripting languages, testing platforms with about 50% of time on
lab work. We are also responsible to conduct faculty-training
programs and maintain quality of the entire activities. So
FAER has decided to conduct a one-week faculty program on testing
essentially to provide knowledge on testing, quality, industry practices
and tools and motivate them in this direction during July 11th
to July 16th. The program will focus on both theory and
lab work with Handson. The one-week program will be handled by senior
and experienced industry leaders. The faculties are Prof Rajanikanth
of MSRIT, Dr. K. Subramanian and Prashant Joshi from Motorola, Ravi
Ram and Rajan from Integra Micro Systems, Praharaj from Jataayu
Software, Prof D K Subramanian. There will be a large component
of labs and demonstration of tools. Dr V Gopalakrishna technical
director jataayu software will coordinate the program. The main objective is to provide the requisite
inputs to teachers so that they can provide quality teaching to
students in the coming years. About thirty teachers from several
govt. and private polytechnics will participate in this program.
This will be a new endeavor in improving the purpose and skills
of our polytechnic education and may be a forerunner for several
programs. This program will reach to other polytechnics in the coming
years. We seek your support for this experiment. The program is supported by the Directorate of
Technical Education, Government of Karnataka and will be run at
M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bangalore. Inaugurated by Dr. M P Ravindra, Vice President
